Shelter staff and foster parents want nothing more than a lasting, joyful placement. Asking clear, constructive questions helps ensure you and the dog are a good match.
Key Questions to Consider
- **Intake and Background** - How did this dog arrive at the organization (stray, owner surrender, transfer)? - How long have they been in your care, and has that time been in a kennel or foster home?
- **Behavior and Daily Life** - How do they react to unfamiliar people, other dogs, and cats? - What is their typical energy level throughout the day? - Have you observed any resource guarding, sound sensitivity, or separation anxiety?
- **Routine and Training** - What bathroom routine have they maintained, and are they considered house-trained? - Do they walk comfortably on a leash or pull strongly? - Are they accustomed to crate resting?
- **Medical Care** - Are vaccinations, spay/neuter surgery, and heartworm prevention up to date? - Are there known ongoing medical conditions or dental needs?
